Moving in winter can be a difficult task, especially if you live in an area where it snows. You have to deal with icy pavements and the cold winter air, and picking up boxes might be a hassle if you’re wearing gloves.

But there are tips and strategies that will make your winter move easier on your body and bring down your stress levels. We’ve provided seven tips that will help you stay organized and ensure that you protect your belongings when moving to a new home. Keep reading so you can have a stress-free winter move!

    1. Create a Moving Plan

One of the first things you need to do is create a detailed moving plan. Write down everything you want to achieve before the day of the move. Creating a moving plan will keep you organized and help you manage your time effectively.

It should be noted that during winter, the days are a lot shorter. So you must try to complete tasks during the day. Use your moving plan to allocate tasks and decide when to speak to landlords and when to cancel your utilities.

    2. Choose a Moving Company

Your next step is to research moving and storage companies to help you. Using a moving company will help alleviate the stress that comes with moving heavy objects. It’s also more affordable to hire a company to move your belongings for you.

Storage companies can help keep some of your belongings safe until the end of your move. Store small boxes and appliances so you can move big furniture into your house first. You can then move smaller items into your home when you have space to unpack boxes.  For those relocating across greater distances, long distance movers can provide specialized services that ensure your items are safely transported and organized throughout the entire process.

    3. Pack Your Belongings Correctly

The most tedious part of moving to a new house is packing your belongings. You may struggle with this task because you simply don’t know where to start. When you’re packing up your house, you want to focus on one room at a time. Start packing up the least used room in the house.

Additionally, you should use the right-sized boxes when you pack so that items don’t move around. Use packing paper or bubble wrap for fragile items and pack the heavier stuff at the bottom of a box and the lighter stuff on top.

    4. Keep Tabs on the Weather

You may want to look at the weather charts, especially for the day you want to move. Make sure there isn’t heavy snowfall, strong winds, or rain that could make your move difficult. If the weather isn’t suitable to move on your planned date, you can always try to reschedule.

    5. Cancel and Disconnect Utilities

There are utilities you need to cancel on the day you leave for your new home. You should contact your electricity provider and ask them to cancel or move your service. Here are additional services you may need to cancel:

    • Gas services
    • Water
    • Trash and recycling
    • Home security system
    • Postal service

    6. Let the Movers do the Work

Moving heavy boxes and large appliances like fridges and couches can take its toll on your body. It can also be a safety hazard, especially if the roads are slippery. Let the moving service you’ve hired do all the heavy lifting. They are trained and experienced with moving heavy items.

Furthermore, movers may want to pack the truck in a specific way to prevent damage to your items. Your job is to simply let the movers know which items you’d like them to take first. Make sure you label your boxes correctly so that the movers know which boxes have fragile items inside.

    7. Wear Proper Clothing

In the heart of winter, you could experience aching hands and feet from low temperatures. Make sure you wear the right clothing on the day you’re moving to your new home. Wear clothes that are insulated with fleece material. You can also wear beanies and hats to keep your head warm.

To keep your hands warm, you should wear mittens or gloves. If you live in an area where it snows, you should wear snow boots so that you don’t slip on the road. Wearing the right attire will keep you comfortable throughout the moving process, which can also lower your stress levels.

    Final Thoughts

Moving during the winter months doesn’t have to be a nightmare. With the right plan and strategies, your move can be a breeze. So, if you’re worried about moving to a new house during winter, simply follow the seven tips we’ve provided. Following the plans outlined in this guide will keep you organized and stress-free during your move.
