The most unusual sports you may not have heard of

Everyone is used to sports in the conventional sense being about absolute seriousness. Constant work on yourself, pain, tears, sweat, fatigue, toxic atmosphere and scandals. You must work hard to climb the Olympic podium and prove to everyone that your time was well spent.

But, as in any business, sport has a downside. It’s absurd, incomprehensible and hilarious. Anything can be turned into a joke. You say it can’t? Here’s the proof.

The cultures of the world are so different. And naturally, that’s reflected in what people start competing in. You’ve heard of some of these sports somewhere and something, but you’re just now learning about the rest. You can’t wait to bet on these sports on the Betstarexch App, but anything can happen if they get more popular.

    Rowing on pumpkins

Well, people learned about walking on water as far back as 2022. Then, they discovered they could make it possible to keep their feet dry, so they started building boats.

In the 2000s, people realized you can grow a boat, not build one. And what do we see? That’s right, pumpkin racing.

Here are a couple of facts about the sport:

    • The race is held annually in the United States and Canada;
    • The average regatta fruit weighs approximately 350 pounds.

    Arm wrestling with your legs

One of the most popular and exciting sports is arm wrestling, in other words, arm wrestling. People meet at a particular table to prove the best arm strength. This sport is one of the hardest in the world, and you also have to be a good analyst there.

But why can’t there be leg wrestling if there’s arm wrestling? We can. As the chronicle says, in 1976, a pub owner in English Devonshire invented foot wrestling. The Brits liked it so much that the pastime became a national sport in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The rules are more straightforward than eating an avocado. Athletes cling to each other with thumbs and place their feet between two planks. The winner is the one who has the good fortune to pin his opponent’s foot to the plank.

    The Coopershield Cheese Race

The name of this competition can be used as a practice for your diction. The annual competition is held on Cooper’s Hill’s slope, near Gloucester.

The idea is that a head of Gloucester cheese is rolled down from the top of the hill, and the competitors have to catch up with it, rolling down the same way as the head.

During the competition, the cheese head can reach a speed of about 112.5 km/h.

The champion is the one who crosses the finish line first. The main prize is the same cheese. And an entertaining fact – the competition has been held for about 200 years.

    Belly diving

Belly diving can be classified as an extreme sport. As a nice bonus, there is a solid reward.

The main task is a graceful, unique and maximally prolonged belly dive into the water, and at the climax, it is necessary to group and enter the water. Otherwise, you’ll break your back, and an ambulance paramedic will discover some more of your injuries.

    Water Climbing

It is another hybrid sport that combines two everyday activities. The essence is to climb the performances of the sloping wall and, in the end, beautifully jump off. The task is difficult, so all athletes fall into the water during the ascent. Scoring is done in two categories: speed of the climb and quality of the jump.

    Bossaball

This time, it’s more of a claim to a complete and adequate sport—the quintessential soccer, acrobatics and volleyball.

This crazy sport was invented in Spain, and after that, it conquered other countries.

The game is team-based and takes place on a giant inflatable trampoline divided into two halves by a volleyball net.

The ball is allowed to be hit with any part of the body. Players have the right to make five touches, after which the ball must fly on the field to the opponents. That’s the short version.

The most unusual sports you may not have heard of

    Quidditch

I wonder how one famous writer reacted when she learned that her fantasy had materialized. This sport is not only played by Harry Potter fans but also by ordinary people.

The first match is said to have occurred in 2005 at the American Middlebury College. Two years later, Potter fans organized a full-fledged US Cup among several colleges there. In 2010, the Intercollegiate Quidditch Association achieved “international” status.

“It’s a serious sport with established regulations. We have a long-term goal to try and make it more serious, which could mean getting to the Olympics,” says Thomas Fisk, a spokesman for the UK Quidditch Association.

It’s worth putting preconceptions aside, as the sport is serious. It will remind new viewers of rugby, dodgeball and sledging. Balls and brooms are available from the equipment.

    Tuna Throwing Competition

The cherry on our absurd cake will be the unusual sport of throwing frozen tuna, which has an entire championship.

The roots go back to 1979; at that time, the organizers of “Tunarama” thought about what special symbol to give the festival, but one that would glorify Port Lincoln. They came up with the idea after watching fishermen throwing fish from their boats in the harbour. And that’s how the idea of a tuna hurling championship was born.

You don’t need any special equipment. The most important thing is to throw the fish as far as possible. There is no need to prepare specially. Anyone who wants to participate in the championship and has never missed a “fish day” at school can do so.
